About
Lymphedema
What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is both serious and debilitating. Lymphedema is generally defined as the swelling that occurs in your arms or legs. Although lymphedema generally affects just one arm or leg, in can affect both arms or both legs.
The lymphatic system is an integral part of the immune and circulatory systems. Lymphedema is caused by a blockage in the lymphatic system. The blockage prevents lymph fluid from draining effectively and consistently, and as the fluid builds up, the swelling continues. Cancer treatment will often require the removal of or damage to the lymph nodes.
Lymphedema and Chronic Venous Insufficiency may result from hereditary, post mastectomy, post lumpectomy, post radiation therapy, post pelvic surgery, and other medical reasons. There's no cure for lymphedema, but it can be controlled. Controlling lymphedema involves diligent care of your affected limb.
